Desert Pines High School Class of 2016
Eva was placed in a Senior JAG classroom by her counselor because she was missing both credits and all 4 proficiency exams. Eva had a plethora of barriers such as having an excessive record of absences the prior year, having been suspended previously, and having struggles with her English proficiency. Not to mention Eva was a first generation graduate with very little support from her family members. Eva was also personally struggling with depression and drug use Eva explained she had moved to the United States just only a few years’ prior with her family in hopes to escape hardships her family was facing in Mexico. Immediately Eva began to struggle academically because she was unable to read and write in English. Because of this Eva became very depressed and down about her abilities as a student. Eva was encouraged by her Specialist to at least begin to try harder to attend school and attend tutoring to bring her grades up and make a real attempt at the proficiencies when they came around. When the first scores came back, Eva had passed only one proficiency. This was not enough for Eva and continue with her depression and lack of motivation for school. Her Specialist took this opportunity again to get her back on track. Slowly there was a change in Eva, and one by one she began to pass her proficiencies and raise her grades. Unfortunately, Eva did not graduate as she hoped for in June of 2016 with her fellow classmates. Her Specialist continue to support her and continued to push her to study, giving her weekly tasks to practice with and encouraged her to continue tutoring over the summer. August rolled around and Eva contacted her Specialist. She had passed her final proficiency and would be walking in the Summer graduation! She explained she was very thankful for her Specialist that had not given up on her, like everyone else, and she now realized she is worthy and capable of setting goals for herself and accomplishing them with hard work and determination. On August 23rd, 2016 Eva walked across that stage with her head held high and the biggest smile. Eva is also currently looking for employment as she hopes to begin her journey into adulthood.
