The Sidney Prize for Journalism

The Sydney Prize is given out annually in recognition of an exceptional piece of journalism published within the previous month. Nominations must be received by midnight of each month and can include either your own work or that of another writer. This prize honors Sidney Hillman, an immigrant who dedicated his life to building “a better America”. Journalists who illuminate our time’s greatest issues through journalism will be recognized, such as: peace and its pursuit; economic justice, including providing housing, medical care, and jobs to all; civil liberties promotion and democracy enhancement, as well as fighting discrimination of any sort. The winner receives a $500 honorarium and prize certificate designed by New Yorker cartoonist Edward Sorel. Additionally, all winners receive an original Sydney Prize swirl award crafted in Australia by Dinosaur Designs; it serves as an official Festival mesmerizing award.

Established in 1930 with a gift of one thousand pounds from Dr H.M. Moran of Macquarie Street Sydney to honour his sister, this prize has been presented annually since then to students demonstrating exceptional proficiency in third year and fourth year Linguistics units at University of Sydney.

In addition to the Sydney Prizes, The Society of American Historians awards numerous other prizes for research and teaching. These awards include: Brooke Hindle Postdoctoral Fellowship; designed to help support recent PhD or MA recipients whose book projects cover religion in North America history; Abbot Payson Usher Prize is bestowed annually upon an early career scholar for publishing an outstanding article related to technology history;

The Sidney Hook Memorial Award recognizes national distinction by an Phi Beta Kappa member who has excelled at scholarship, undergraduate teaching and leadership within liberal arts education. This honor will be bestowed at our Triennial Council and announced through Key Reporter, General Newsletter and social media at least 18 months in advance.

The committee has sent letters to Sidney Cox’s friends and has received an encouraging response, yet more is necessary for establishing the fund on a solid and lasting foundation. Donations are currently being accepted at 1 Occom Ridge in Hanover with Prof. Harry T. Schultz ’37 serving as treasurer for this committee. If you would like to contribute, please make your check payable to SAH and send it directly. Alternatively, feel free to get in touch for more information or assistance. We thank you for your generosity – the Sydney Prize’s first prize will be presented in 2023! Nazanin Boniadi has been awarded the 2023 Sydney Peace Prize for her efforts in advocating for women’s rights in Iran. This prize seeks to transform outrage into action, and we are delighted that Sydney Town Hall and University of Sydney are sponsoring it as sponsors of this award.
