The Hongkong Prize is one of Asia’s premier awards and attracts thousands of applicants annually. It recognizes scientists for their accomplishments while encouraging further scientific study. Furthermore, it provides a forum where scientists can showcase their work to a broader audience. If interested in applying, participants should carefully read over and consult a representative regarding participation rules to avoid problems and increase chances of winning.
At an annual ceremony, winners of the Hongkong Prize are honored with cash and other perks as part of their award package. Also included in their package is a certificate and letter of thanks from Hong Kong government officials. In addition, winners gain access to its research facilities – an invaluable way of furthering their work and increasing their reputation.
HK prizes were established to recognize and award outstanding works across multiple fields, such as science and technology, the arts, sports, and business. Their judging process considers quality of work as well as innovations and transformations made. Prior recipients have included inventors such as Liquid Biopsy; 20-year old women working to increase confidence among women; architects using bamboo construction for affordable housing projects – just to name a few!
Many of the finalists are committed to social activism and community service, such as a 20-year-old who launched a nonprofit providing shelter for homeless adults, and a professor who developed a liquid biopsy to detect cancer faster. Also featured among them is an entrepreneur specializing in custom perfume creation as well as one who runs a restaurant chain offering daily free meals to customers.
Along with receiving a monetary prize, winners of Hong Kong prizes have an incredible opportunity to explore its culture and history while meeting distinguished alumni, receiving special medallions to commemorate this momentous achievement, or using their prizes for charitable activities.
To qualify for the Hongkong prize, scientists must submit an original research article that they are the primary author on. It must include clinical, observational or epidemiological research as well as basic science research – not simply reviews or letters to editors.
The Hong Kong Prize is open to both Chinese and non-Chinese students alike, honoring works in all disciplines such as humanities, social sciences, medicine, engineering and computer science. This year’s ceremony witnessed some exciting wins including To My Nineteen-Year-Old Self (To My Nineteen Year Old Self) winning best movie and Detective Vs Sleuths winning best TV series; along with several schools being recognized for promoting the ideals behind HK Prize – in particular Nanyang Girls’ High School who provided scholarships for disadvantaged students.
