Hong Kong may conjure images of shopping and dim sum, but do you remember its beautiful pools as an option for swimming? From sky pools with panoramic views to natural infinity ponds perched high upon mountainsides – Hong Kong boasts some breathtaking spots. Here are our favorites.
One of the most striking pools can be found at the Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong, situated 118th Floor of Hong Kong’s tallest building and offering spectacular views of Victoria Harbor and Hong Kong Island through floor-to-ceiling windows. Plus LCD screens display images of tropical fish, bubbles and clouds to keep swimmers amused!
Kerry Hotel’s outdoor pool in Hung Hom is another pool with breathtaking views. Lined with sun loungers and lush green plants, this magnificent oasis provides the ideal place to soak up some rays while reading or sipping on cocktails at their terrace bar. A day pass costs just HK$250 on weekdays while weekends and public holidays cost HK$350 (and includes access to both spa and gym facilities).
While New York is home to numerous public swimming pools, it also features some exclusive ones for an even more luxurious experience. Hotels such as The Peninsula and Mandarin Oriental feature some of the city’s most lavish pools – featuring waterfalls, hot tubs, private changing rooms and much more. If budget constraints are an issue for you then check out YMCA Bridges Street Centre; their rates are less expensive compared to others within city limits.
Recreation and Sports Professionals General Union reports that nearly half of Hong Kong’s 45 public pools will only partially open this summer due to a shortage of lifeguards, with 20 already warning local swimming training institutions they will close lanes or facilities reserved for classes if unable to recruit enough lifeguards. It remains unknown exactly what this could entail but opening partial pools is suspected by RSPGU of jeopardizing industry development as well as swimmers themselves.
Nature enthusiasts may enjoy hiking to Man Cheung Po, a stunning crystal-clear pool near Tai O, which was “naturally” formed in a gorge with waterfall. Offering stunning views of mountains, sea and an ancient bridge it can be reached via Bride’s Pool Nature Trail which makes an enjoyable hike suitable for children.
